Paint-A-Chair Event
The Paint–a –Chair project was an inclusive and fun event that produced interest in the Cowichan South area throughout the summer. It began with 56 auditorium chairs from the Cobble Hill Farmers Institue that were transformed by members of the Cowichan South Arts Guild into imaginative and enjoyable objects of art.
The chairs were photographed and are all on the website to view. They were displayed in local businesess in the Cowichan Valley and then at the Cobble Hill Fair on August 26th. Each finished chair sold in a silent auction process. Half the proceeds went to the Guild and half to the artist. With thanks to chair event organizer Terry Harrison, the participating businesses, and the great team of volunteers!

Welcome to all Paint-A-Chair participants:This is our second event, incorporating members into an activity that highlights the arts, involves the business community and invites the public to view and bid on your painted chairs. Let all your friends, family and contacts know where to see your chairs, encourage them to bid, and remember, if you simply can't part with your beautiful chair, you can bid on it! Protect your chairs when you bring them in. A large plastic garbage bag works really well as protection and it's easy to put on and take off, something we'll have to do several times as we move them from place to place. Several of the painters have offered to help transport the chairs. If any more of you would like to help we would be very grateful. If you can bring your pick up truck or van to help, please let us know at [email protected] |
We have 56 chairs like the one on the poster, and artists, artisans and wanna-be artists can reserve a chair by emailing [email protected] then pick up the chair for which they will be asked to pay $5, take out a membership in the Arts Guild for $10, then whisk the chair away to be painted.
Bev Robertson, who painted the brilliant chair in the poster, has compiled a Help Sheet giving tips on the type of paint that would be suitable, how to prepare the surface, how to coat it so it could go outside in the garden, and other useful information that will be given out with the chairs.
Once the chairs have been painted, the artists will return them to the Arts Guild by July 11. The chairs will be placed in businesses and public places throughout the three south end communities for display during the summer. Admirers will be able to leave bids on the chairs in a silent auction.
Next stop will be the Cobble Hill Fair on August 26, where all the painted chairs will be displayed in a tent. Fair-goers will be able to decide which are their favourites and leave silent auction bids on them.
On August 31 during the last Music In The Park concert in Cobble Hill Village, the chairs will make their final public appearance and silent auction bids will be taken.
Proceeds from the sale of the chairs will be shared equally by the artists and the Arts Guild.
This is your opportunity to be part of a colourful, whimsical and enjoyable event.
Reserve your chair right away before they are all gone.
